PRACTICE SET ADOBE PREMIERE

YOU WILL BE USING AND MANIPULATING VIDEO FORMATS AS A MEANS TO CREATING AND EDITING VIDEO PROJECTS.  WE WILL BUILD ON OUR KNOWLEDGE OF IMAGE FORMATS AND AUTHOR A BASIC LAYERED VIDEO.

PART A – INTRODUCTION TO ADOBE PREMIERE

  1. Open Adobe Premiere.
  2. From the menu bar at the top, go to “Help”, and then select “Adobe Premiere Pro Tutorials”.
  3. Click on the video entitled “Create a Project and Import a Clip”.
  4. Now that we have a basic grasp of the workspace, we need to plan our project by putting our “assets” together.
  5. Create the following “assets” and put them in the same folder called “assets”:
    1. The photo that you created from the previous lab
    1. The logo you created from the previous lab
    1. The transparent image from the previous lab
    1. Now use your phone to shoot a video in the lab and add it to that folder by emailing it or letting it sync to Dropbox.
  6. In Adobe Premiere, select “New Project”.
  7. Give your project a name and make the location the same as your Assets folder.
  8. As we can see, there is nothing in this project, so we will start by importing our assets.
  9. Go to File-Import and when the window comes up, you can select all the files at the same time and import.
  10. We now have to create a “Sequence”, so that we can put the assets on our timeline.  The simplest way to do this, in order to make sure it’s compatible with our assets is to drag and drop the video file from the Project window into the Timeline/Sequence video.
  11. You can now drag and drop all the other assets, one at a time, into the window and line them up side by side.
  12. We will now preview our video.  On the Program window (Top right) click the play button and watch your creation.

PART B – EDITING YOUR VIDEO

  1. Moving Assets:
    1. Simply drag and drop clips to move them from one place to another.
    1. You can also make the clips smaller by selecting the “Razor” Tool (Hotkey “C”) and chopping them as you would with a knife.
  2. Layering:
    1. Drag and drop the PNG image from the V1 line on the sequence up to the V2 line.  Then put it on top of the video.
    1. Play back the video and notice how you can see the video behind the transparent part of the PNG.  This is a handy tool called “overlay” and it’s a basic introduction to how transparency works in Premiere.
  3. Shortening/Lengthening:
    1. Click on one of the clips on the sequence.  When you move your mouse to the end or the beginning of the clip, the arrow turns to a red arrow and allows you to shorten or lengthen it.  Drag and drop to do so.
  4. Transitions:
    1. Switch to the “Effects Workspace” by click on “Effects” at the top of your editing window.
    1. Ensure two of your assets are directly next to each other on the timeline.
    1. In the “Effects” window on the right-hand side, open the container that is labelled “Video Transitions”.
    1. You can now drag and drop any transition you want onto your timeline.
    1. Pick a transition and drag it to the cutline between assets.
    1. Play back your sequence and preview your transition.
  5. Adding Music and Sound:
    1. Go to: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music
    1. Pick a song
    1. Download it to your assets folder and import it to your project.
    1. Drag and drop it into your sequence
    1. You can move, resize and apply transitions the same way (Use Audio Transitions instead of Video Transitions)

PART C – EXPORTING YOUR VIDEO

  1. Make sure the sequence window is highlighted.
  2. Go to File-Export-Media
  3. Format will be H.264
  4. Preset should be “Mobile Device 480p SD Wide”.
  5. Click on “Output Name” and name your file.
  6. Hit Export.
  7. Watch your file by double-clicking it in Windows Explorer.
